Early insights: data on PhD grad trajectories

Early insights: data on PhD grad trajectories

About the project:

What happens to humanities PhDs post-graduation? In light of recent (and discouraging) media coverage, these questions are more important than ever…but very little is known about the trajectory of humanities PhDs.

This project aims to address this knowledge gap. By gathering publicly-available data on over 2,400 PhD graduates from a wide variety of disciplines, we paint a clearer picture of this population and provide timely descriptive evidence on career paths, gender differences, migration, and more. These data are invaluable in helping us to understand trends in (and dispel myths about) the trajectories and contributions of PhD graduates in the humanities. Check back often for updates!

About the sample: fast facts

  • Canadian institutions sampled: 23 (data collection is complete for 22 institutions)
  • Percent female: 54%
  • Current countries of residence: 60
  • Percent remaining in Canada post-grad: 77%
  • Year of graduation: Ranges from 2003 to 2015
  • Most common disciplines: English, History
